What is the Acceptance Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that aims to help individuals accept their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. ACT focuses on six core processes that contribute to psychological flexibility:

  1. Acceptance: Encouraging individuals to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than avoiding or denying them. Acceptance is not about liking these experiences, but about acknowledging their presence.

  2. Cognitive Defusion: Learning to perceive thoughts, images, emotions, and memories as they are, not as what they appear to be. This involves distancing oneself from one's thoughts to reduce their impact.

  3. Being Present: Promoting ongoing, non-judgmental contact with psychological and environmental events as they occur. This mindfulness component helps individuals stay engaged in the present moment rather than being caught up in past or future concerns.

  4. Self-as-Context: Understanding that there is a distinction between oneself and the content of one's thoughts and feelings. This perspective encourages seeing oneself as a constant observer, separate from the fluctuating content of the mind.

  5. Values: Clarifying what is most important to the individual, such as personal values and life directions. This process helps guide and motivate behavior changes that are aligned with these values.

  6. Committed Action: Taking concrete steps to live according to one's values. This involves setting goals and taking actions that are in line with one's values, even in the face of difficulties and challenges.

ACT combines these processes to help individuals create a rich, full, and meaningful life while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it. This therapy is often used for a variety of psychological issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, and substance abuse. It is grounded in the idea that suffering is a normal part of life, and that by accepting this, people can commit to actions that improve their well-being and life satisfaction.

Interazioni umane, pseudoumane, creative
Recentemente sto riflettendo sul concetto di "interazioni umane e pseudoumane" (cioè interazioni -- ovvero scambi, comunicazioni, transazioni, cooperazioni, stimolazioni, manipolazioni fisiche o morali --- tra due esseri umani o tra un essere umano e un simulacro di essere umano o oggetto o macchina o software rappresentativo o suggestivo di umanità) come bisogno psicologico elementare primario, di basso livello nel senso lo porrei allo stesso livello del nutrirsi nella gerarchia dei bisogni di Maslow e che esige di essere soddisfatto periodicamente, in forma fisica o metaforica, a qualsiasi costo, anche a quello di rinunciare alla propria libertà, razionalità e dignità.

Da qui mi è venuta l'idea di definire il concetto di "interazioni creative" intendendo delle modalità di interazione tra esseri umani basate non su convenzioni tradizionali (o comunque mediate da usi e costumi) ma su regole flessibili, dinamiche e variabili da inventare (creativamente) e negoziare di volta in volta tra due esseri umani interessati a interagire tra loro. Intendo regole di tipo linguistico, cognitivo, economico, didattico, contrattuale, etico/morale, sessuale etc.

  • Most memories disappear within minutes, but those that survice the fragile period strengthen with time.
  • Long-term memories are formed in a two-way conversation between the hippocampus and the cortex, until the hippocampus breaks the connection and the memory is fixed in the cortex--which can take years.
  • Our brains give us an approximatate view of reality, because they mix new knowledge with past memories and store them  together as one.
  • The way to make long-term memory more reliable is to incorporate new information gradually and repeat it in timed intervals.

Rule #9: Stimulate more of the senses at the same time
  • We absorb information about an event through our senses, translate it into electrical signals, (some for sight, others from sound, etc.), disperse those signals to separate parts of the brain, then reconstruct what happened, eventually perceiving the event as a whole.
  • The brain seems to rely partly on past experiences in deciding how to combine these signals, so two people can perceive the same event very differently.
  • Our senses evolved to work together--vision influencing hearing, for example-- which means that we learn best if we stimulate several senses at once.
  • Smells have an unusual power to bring back memories, maybe because smell signals bypass the thalamus and head straight to their destinations, which include that supervisor of emotions known as the amygdala.

The Weather Company Runs First ‘Cognitive Ads’ For Toyota
The Weather Company, an IBM Business, is taking another big leap in connecting artificial intelligence and advertising with the launch of what the company claims is the “first cognitive ads” for the auto industry in a campaign to promote the Toyota Prius Prime.

The Watson Ads for the Prius Prime will run in The Weather Channel App and on weather.com.

The campaign follows recent uses of Watson Ads by the Campbell Soup Company, Unilever, and GSK Consumer Healthcare, respectively began their first foray into marketing that promises to understand and respond intelligently to consumers’ voice-activated and written queries.
