Porta San Paolo fa parte del complesso delle mura Aureliane realizzate dall’imperatore Aureliano nel 275 d.C. e si presenta come tra le meglio conservate di tutto il circuito murario. L’attuale nome le fu conferito nel medioevo in ragione della vicinanza alla Basilica di San Paolo raggiungibile mediante  la via Ostiense che iniziava il suo percorso verso Ostia proprio da questa porta.
